Perry, the fact that these residents are spending most of their time buzzing around that one patient makes me think that you told them to disobey a direct order from me.Dr. Kelso

Bob Kelso, that's just not true. Here, I told them to disregard all direct orders from you.Dr. Cox

"My Advice to You" is the sixth episode of Scrubs' third season. Carla's brother Marco (Freddy Rodríguez) arrives and doesn't get along with Turk. J.D. meets Danni (Tara Reid) and realizes he needs someone else in his life to get over Elliot. Dr. Cox and Dr. Kelso have a power struggle over the residents' respect.

Synopsis

3x6 Turk Marco

Turk and Marco arguing

Carla's brother Marco is coming to town, and J.D. asks Turk what is the deal between Marco and him. Turk explains that he accidentally mistook Marco for a valet at a funeral of his mother-in-law, Marco and Carla's mother, and they haven't gotten along since. Turk is not able to apologize either because Marco only speaks Spanish. J.D. is having problems getting over Elliot because she is always around. Sean calls while Elliot and J.D. are on call. Elliot gives the phone to J.D. to say hello, but J.D. just hangs up. Dr. Cox, the new resident director, want the residents to stop goofing off all the time.

3x6 JD Danni

J.D. meets Danni in the elevator.

In the elevator, J.D. meets a young lady named Danni. She tells him a lousy story, but then explains that she has an inner monologue, just like J.D. Turk becomes angry, as Marco and Carla constantly speak Spanish around him. Dr. Kelso says that all doctors need to concentrate equally on all patients, but then Dr. Cox says to concentrate on one patient, Mrs. Barto. Marco tells Turk that he has never learned any Spanish for the woman he loves. Dr. Kelso tells the residents that the reason why Dr. Cox says to only concentrate on one patient is because he says the opposite that he does. J.D. encounters Danni, who had just ended her relationship, and she asks him to go get coffee with her. He declines because Elliot needs a backrub. Turk finds out that Marco speaks English, and he tells Carla. Marco still denies that he speaks English. J.D. looks for Danni, who is having dinner with her sister. He asks her out for two cups of coffee and pie, and she says yes. He was very happy about finding a girl, but just at that moment Jordan comes to find J.D. with Danni, who reveals that Danni is her sister.

Baby, why is there a pancake in the silverware drawer?Carla

You mean, why is there silverware in the pancake drawer? Whuhuh!Turk

And Turk, you don't mind if every now and then Marco and I speak Spanish to each other, right?Carla

Baby, fo'shizzle-dizzle. Do your thizzle, 'cause I'm up out this pizzle. Church! See, we got our own secret language, too. Eh-ha!Turk
(In Spanish) What did he say?Marco Espinosa
I have no idea.

Jackass!

Inner monologue? (Sing-song voice) Weirdo!J.D.'s narration

3x6 Danni and family

J.D. meets Danni's family... Jordan and Dr. Cox.

You're losing them! Oh, don't get me wrong, you had me worried there was gonna be a bunch of young Dr. Coxes roaming the halls, calling me "Bobbo," shaving my genitals when I pass out at the Christmas party...Dr. Kelso

Tradition is tradition, Bob.Dr. Cox
Yeah... then I remembered that you've been here over ten years, and there's not a single disciple of yours to be found. And you know why?

You told 'em this exact same story and bored 'em to death?

Trivia/Goofs

  • Marco punches Turk in the left eye, but Turk gets a black eye on his right eye.
  • Danni narrates one line in this episode: "Weirdo!"
  • When J.D. is talking to Danni at the cafeteria, you can see a doctor sitting at a table behind J.D.. When a man walks behind this doctor and tips him on his shoulders, he turns around. In the next shot with J.D. you can see it again.
  • It is revealed J.D's mother's maiden name is Hobbs, although in the episode "My Hero", it was Turner.
    • It could be possible that J.D's maternal grandmother's maiden name was Hobbs and choose to keep her last name.
  • In this episode, Carla talks about moving to the U.S. from the Dominican Republic. However, in "My Identity Crisis", Turk says that she has never been to the "homeland" and is from Chicago. This could just be Turk's lack of knowledge about his wife's ethnicity and past, though.
  • When Carla asks Marko in Spanish "So when I was in high school, you heard me talking to my friends about going on the pill?", she incorrectly says "high school" instead of "colegio". However, this might be her trying to be correct, as she went to an american "high school", not a dominican "colegio".
  • Donald Faison and Freddy Rodríguez also appeared together in Can't Hardly Wait, a 1998 teen comedy.
  • After losing at Pac-Man, Marco yells "Darn you!". Both these words are English, which should have tipped off Carla and Turk (who were in the room) that Marco speaks English and that they lied about about him not speaking it.
  • Donald Faison's microphone wire is visible next to his tie in the scene at the funeral.
