Dr. Jonathan Doris is the college friend of creator Bill Lawrence, who Lawrence named the character John Dorian after. Lawrence's show Scrubs is loosely based on some of Doris' experiences during his internal medicine residency. Dr. John Doris also served as a Medical Advisor for the complete run of Scrubs, and appeared in My Finale. According to Bill Lawrence and Zach Braff his nickname on the set is Real J.D.

Jonathan graduated from the College of William & Mary and received a doctorate in medicine from Albany Medical College. He went on to complete his residency in internal medicine at Brown Medical School. Following the completion of residency, he entered a fellowship in cardiology at Kaiser Permanente Los Angeles Medical Center. He was a medical advisor for Scrubs, and is the assistant director for the electrophysiology fellowship at Los Angeles Medical Center. He is married to Dr. Dolly Klock who was a medical advisor on the show as well.
