"Her Story II" is the tenth episode of Scrubs' fifth season and the fourth. In the episode, Carla Espinosa narrates as she gets stressed about a combination of her age and her attempts to get pregnant. Turk helps J.D. get over his hate of Julie's habit to say "that's so funny!" instead of laughing.
Synopsis[]
J.D. is afraid that his narration will ruin his relationship, so he decides to "stay out of his head", and passes on the narration to Carla in this episode.
Carla feels threatened by a new Hispanic nurse whom Janitor describes as a "young Carla". She, Jordan, Elliot and Julie Quinn go out for drinks, and the next day they are all massively hungover, except for Julie. After talking to Mrs. Wilk about age, Carla gets a fertility test. Well she tries to until she sees the new gynecologist, Dr. Matthews. He recommends that she not get a fertility test unless she's over 35. 36-year-old Carla says she's 29. Dr. Kelso steps in and tells her to get the fertility test, and the results come back positive. She and Turk celebrate with sex.
J.D. and Julie's relationship is progressing fine, except J.D. cannot get over Julie's personal tic of saying "That's so funny!" instead of laughing. Turk and Elliot stage an intervention to help him avoid ruining his relationship because of such a small issue. J.D. manages to move past this; however, he and Julie split up anyway when he realizes her visions of their future together do not quite match his. His friends reassure him that he broke up with her for a genuine reason.
Recurring Themes[]
Fantasies[]
- Carla is insulted, so she turns into a banshee and screams so ferociously that all the glass in the hospital smashes, including Turk, who is nicknamed "Glass Man", and Kelso's glasses and cup. Janitor, J.D., Turk, and Kelso watch in horror and scream in absolute terror at the banshee Carla.
- Carla imagines everyone in diapers when she can't stop thinking of babies, including J.D. (who proceeds to wet himself in a diaper).
Flashback[]
- Turk remembers an ex-girlfriend with an annoying quirk: Whitney the Snapper.
- J.D. and Julie meet their neighbors, who resemble rednecks. Although good-natured, they want to get rid of their baby by convincing J.D. to buy it. Julie stands firm, even though a free crib is offered.
Janitor Story[]
Since Carla is narrating this episode, the Janitor focuses on her. He repeatedly points out how old she is after she mistakenly says he is 45 (he is actually 43). The Janitor is the one who initially brought up the "Young Carla" comparison to Nurse Martinez.
J.D.'s Girl Names[]
- Joanna
- “Did you know, J.D's parents thought he was going to be a girl. They didn't have a name ready when he was born, so until he was 3 years old they called him Joanna.”— Julie Quinn
- “I don't know who you are, but thank you for this.”— Dr. Cox
- “I don't know who you are, but thank you for this.”— Dr. Cox
- “Joanna, now I'm not much for this sensitive crap but darn now you finally found someone who is willing to let you annoy them instead of me.”— Dr. Cox
Episode Running Gags[]
- Jordan, along with every other female in the hospital, has a crush on the new gynecologist, Dr. Matthews.
- Julie's godfather is Billy Dee Williams. Turk keeps calling him "Lando Calrissian" (after the character that Billy Dee played in Star Wars) which annoys him.
- Jordan gets so drunk when the girls go out that she ends up in a catatonic state. Dr. Cox describes her as how alcohol affects "the very, very old." He later puts a fake arrow on the unconscious Jordan's head.
- Carla starts a rumor that Nurse Martinez is really a man.

Trivia[]
- This is the fourth episode, following "His Story", "His Story II" and "Her Story", in which the narration is done by someone else and not seen from J.D.'s point of view. This episode is narrated by Carla.
- In this episode, despite giving up his narration, J.D.'s storyline is still the main plot.
- The girls J.D. has messed up with according to Turk: Kylie, Jamie, Gift Shop Girl, Minnie McSkinny, Mole Butt (Elliot), Tina Two-Kids, Rumple Fugly and Heidi Horse-Face.
- Dr. Matthews is one of only two male characters to receive the slow-motion intro, along with Sean Kelly in "My Way or the Highway".
- In this episode the Janitor says he is 43; however, in season one's "My Mentor" he says he is 37. One or both of these statements is a lie considering the most time that possibly could have passed is a little over 4 years.
- When Janitor is showing Nurse Martinez around, he says "And that's you in 20 years" while pointing at Carla. In the same episode, Carla reveals that she is 36, meaning Nurse Martinez would have to be 16 for Janitor's statement to be true; Janitor is saying this just to irritate Carla.
- J.D. says their kids would be called Gilligan and The Skipper because he lost a bet with Turk. Later in the series, he gives his son Sam Perry Gilligan Dorian the middle name Gilligan for the same reason.
Continuity[]
- When J.D. and Turk go to get the hungover girls some coffee, J.D. pours in a little coffee in one cup and sets it down as he is talking to Turk, picking up a different, full cup before walking away.
- When the Janitor first mentions that nurse Martinez looks like a young Carla, Dr. Kelso is not wearing glasses, but when JD has his fantasy of Carla being a witch, Dr. Kelso is wearing glasses.
- J.D. says that Julie never laughs and only says "that is so funny", but Julie actually laughs at J.D.'s joke when he says to his neighbor that next time he would beat him at poker.
