At the hospital he was befriended by Lucy Bennett. He is an alcoholic and used to be married, presumably his marriage ended because of this problem. He is also a very talented artist.

Lucy tried to enter Alan into a rehab center and successfully got the papers ready, but needed a doctors signature to complete it. Perry Cox agreed to sign if Lucy got enough money to pay the doctor who would oversee the rehab procedure. After organizing a successful car wash, Lucy succeeded in getting the money, but was later disappointed when Alan was readmitted to the hospital after he had told her he wanted to change.
